GARY E. MARTINELLI: Having spent 32 years as a business lawyer and another eight years dividing his time between business law and investment management, Gary has become a leading adviser to Western Massachusetts families and businesses on both legal and investment matters. Today, Gary is both our senior corporate lawyer and our chief portfolio manager.
Gary developed his understanding of both legal matters and investments first in a Wall Street law firm where he worked on public and private securities underwritings and mergers and acquisitions. Returning to Springfield in 1974, Gary built on his experience by handling the securities law matters of local companies and working on major and minor real estate developments. He founded Gary E. Martinelli & Associates, P.C. in 1991 and merged the firm with John M. Discenza & Associates, P.C. in 2004. With John, Gary founded Martinelli Discenza Investment Counsel, Inc. In 2000.
From 1981 until 1994, Gary served as the principal outside counsel to Computer Associates International, Inc., an international software company, and for eight years served as a member of its Board of Directors. As counsel he was responsible for the legal aspects of CA's IPO, its subsequent securities offerings, over a dozen major acquisitions and the development and financing of its $190 million corporate headquarters in New York. As a Board member, he served on its Audit, Stock Option and Compensation Committees.
Gary's interest in investing does not stop with traditional marketable securities. By avocation, he is an "angel investor" contributing both capital and advice to local startup companies. His is an active member of River Valley Investors, a Western Massachusetts "angel investing" group.
Gary is a member of the Massachusetts and New York bars. He is a graduate of Williams College (1965) and Cornell Law School (1968).
Gary and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four grown children. He has been active in community affairs since moving to Longmeadow in 1975, co-founded the Longmeadow Soccer Association, and is currently Board President of The Children's Study Home.
